Road closure extension: Main Street southbound (Colonel By Drive to Greenfield Avenue)

The City of Ottawa has commenced construction on the new watermains, sewers, and associated road rehabilitation work as part of the Greenfield-Main-Hawthorne et al. reconstruction project. To facilitate this work, the City of Ottawa has approved the closure of Main Street southbound from Colonel By Drive to Greenfield Avenue outlined below.

What: The southbound closure of Main Street from Colonel By Drive to Greenfield Avenue to accommodate the safe coordination of watermain and electrical infrastructure installation at the Main Street and Greenfield Drive intersection. This closure will extend the existing southbound closure of Main Street, currently closed southbound from Greenfield Avenue to Hawthorne Avenue. The closure of Greenfield Avenue southbound from the 417 on ramp to Main Street remains in place.

Why: The extended southbound Main Street closure is required for the safety of residents and workers, as there is limited area to accommodate the open cut excavation and the necessary labour, materials and equipment.

When:  The southbound closure of Main Street will begin August 26 and run through November 30.  The scheduled closures may be modified as needed, for example if weather affects the schedule, or if conditions change.

Where: Main Street southbound between Colonel By Drive and Greenfield Avenue.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the contractor Green Infrastructure Partners Inc. (GIP), formerly Aecon, to complete the work.

Traffic impacts

The detour for vehicles travelling northbound / southbound on Colonel By Drive wishing to travel northbound Greenfield Avenue is via Hawthorne Avenue. Local egress for the residents fronting Echo Drive or Harvey Street west of Main Street will be via Harvey Street to Main Street. Residents of the 10 Main Street condominium building will access their homes via Main Street northbound from Hawthorne Avenue. Egress for 10 Main Street may at times be limited to northbound on Main Street to Echo Drive eastbound. Note that the southbound closure of Greenfield Avenue and Main Street (separate notice) continues in conjunction with the closure detailed herein.

Garbage collection

The contractor is aware of the garbage collection schedule and is required to maintain access so that garbage can be collected at the curb. If vehicular access is interrupted for any reason, the contractor is responsible to move the garbage from the homeowner’s curb to a common location where it can be picked up. Empty containers will then be returned to the appropriate homeowners/businesses.

Construction disruptions

Green Infrastructure Partners (GIP), formerly Aecon, will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but there may be some inconvenience during the course of the operation of the work, such as delays when travelling through the construction zone, noise and dust. You may also feel vibrations due to heavy equipment operations. Vibrations from construction activities are quite common and rarely cause any problems. We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and co-operation.

The contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the normal life of your family and/or operation of your business, but as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during construction. We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and co-operation. For construction activity hours of work, the City of Ottawa follows provincial requirements and the City’s Noise By-law (2017-255).

Road closure notice: Montcalm Street and Concord Street North (July 22 to November 29, 2024)

The City of Ottawa has commenced construction on the new watermains, sewers, and associated road rehabilitation work as part of the Greenfield-Main-Hawthorne et al. Reconstruction Project. To facilitate this work, the City of Ottawa has approved the closures of Montcalm Street and Concord Street North as outlined below.

What: Full road closures of Montcalm Street and Concord Street North moving with the installation of underground infrastructure.

Why: The road closures are required for the safety of the residents and workers, as there is limited area to accommodate the open cut excavation and the necessary labour, materials and equipment.

When: Montcalm Street and Concord Street will be closed between July 22 and November 29, 2024. The scheduled closures may be modified as needed, for example if weather affects the schedule, or if conditions change.

Where: Montcalm Street from Greenfield Avenue to the dead end (private lane) and Concord Street North from Greenfield Avenue to Havelock Street.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained the Contractor Green Infrastructure Partners Inc. (GIP), to complete the work.

    Accessibility

Accessibility is an important consideration for the City of Ottawa. The City makes every effort to provide access through and around construction sites. If you require a disability-related accommodation, please contact the undersigned. Accessible formats and communication supports are available, upon request.

    Traffic Impacts

For the majority of the full road closures, local access to Montcalm Street and Concord Street North will be maintained. Local access is defined as those living within the limits of the road closure. Periodically, residents may be asked to access their homes from Greenfield Avenue, Havelock Street or Harvey Street. Condominium residents of C.C.C. #246 (60 Greenfield Avenue, 26 & 30 Montcalm Street, & 110 Havelock Street) who typically utilize Montcalm Street, may at times be requested to utilize the Havelock Street entrance. All other motorists are required to follow the signed detours and/or find alternative routes of travel.

    On-street parking and driveway impacts

To allow the work to be completed in a timely manner, on street parking will be prohibited during the construction period. Signs will be placed 24 hours in advance indicating the parking prohibition. The Contractor is obligated to provide 24-hour notification of temporary loss of access/egress. In the event that access to your driveway is restricted due to construction activities, a Temporary On-Street Parking Permit (orange form) will be distributed to permit on-street parking within two blocks of your residence. Residents are encouraged to discuss with the general contractor the potential for parking within the construction zone outside of normal construction hours.

Green Infrastructure Partners (GIP) will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the operation of the work, such as delays when travelling through the construction zone, noise and dust. You may also feel vibrations due to heavy equipment operations. Vibrations from construction activities are quite common and rarely cause any problems. We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and co-operation.

For construction activity hours of work, the City of Ottawa follows provincial requirements and the City’s Noise By-law (2017-255).

Design Study for Aqueduct Park – Environmental Site Assessment

In August 2024, the City of Ottawa will undertake an environmental site assessment (ESA) within your community on the south side of Lett Street. The ESA is required as a preliminary study to support the design and construction of a future park in this area.

Where: The ESA will occur around 324 Lett Street which is just east of Pimisi Station - between Lett Street, Albert Street and Booth Street.

What: The ESA will involve drilling boreholes and installing monitoring wells to collect soil and groundwater samples for testing. Due to various buried utilities and the aqueduct infrastructure which are present in this area, a hydrovac truck will be used to daylight some of the boreholes in close proximity to buried infrastructure. Some of the boreholes will be completed in close proximity to the existing multi-use pathway (MUP) and will therefore necessitate temporary closures of the MUP for portions of the work.

Why: The ESA is required to support the design of a future park at this location, and for meeting the regulatory requirements to redevelop these lands into a municipal park.

When: The borehole drilling activities are scheduled to take place from August 12 to 19, 2024. The temporary MUP closure should be more limited, anticipated from August 12 through 14 between the hours of 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Who: The City of Ottawa has retained Stantec Consulting and their sub-contractors (Strata Soil Sampling and Badger Daylighting) to undertake the ESA for this project.

Map outlining the work area and temporary multi use pathway closure for Aqueduct Park

    Temporary Closure to Multi-Use Pathway

    • Portions of the MUP will be temporarily closed based on the location of some of the required boreholes, where it would not be safe to have daylighting and/or drilling equipment working in such close proximity to the active pathways.
    • The segment of the MUP that will be subject to temporary closure is shown in image below. Signage will be posted at advanced locations leading into this segment to notify bikers and pedestrians of the temporary closures.
    • In an effort to minimize the impact during the major commuting hours, the temporary closure of the MUP will be limited between the hours of 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
